M 7 month stats

Morrison turned 7 months old on New Year’s Eve. I can’t believe we’ve already celebrated a whole new year with him!

IMG_1354

This month has seen some pretty major developments so far. In the week after he turned 7 months old, he took his first crawling “steps,” even though he doesn’t really crawl yet at all. He just gets up on all fours, rocks back and forth, and kind of scoots/hops his little knees forward. That’s how it starts, though!

M2

That same week he also learned how to sit up. This was great, because I’d recently been wondering why he wasn’t sitting yet. I’m pretty sure both girls sat on their own well before 7 months, but every time I set him down in a sitting position he would just fold over on himself and splay out on his tummy. (i actually just read back in Lana’s 7 month post and she was not sitting by then, so maybe Della was) But right after he started doing his crawling scoots, he figured out how to put one of his legs out to the side and push himself back into a full sitting position. I was so proud of him! You could tell he was proud of himself, too, because sitting is now his favorite position. He sits on a blanket on top of the playmats in the living room and flaps his arms around and plays with his toys for hours (yes really, hours).

M1

He is an excellent eater. Since he’s been eating so well with solids and taking formula, my milk supply is all but gone. I do still try to nurse him for the very first feeding of the morning, but I have a feeling he’s only getting a dribble by now. So if he gets a very small first feeding, he gets a 6-8 oz. bottle of formula mid-morning, eats solids at lunch (usually a delectable puree of oatmeal and bananas) with water afterward, another 6-8 oz. bottle of formula mid-afternoon after his nap, solids at dinner (another delicious puree of sweet potatoes, peas, avocados, or a combination of whichever of those we happen to have) with water afterward, and then finally another 6-8 oz. bottle of formula at bedtime. He also started eating baby puffs at 6 months, and he’s become much better at actually getting those into his mouth. We usually give him some in the highchair in the mornings while the girls are eating breakfast, and he normally gets a handful before or after lunch and dinner, too, while I get things ready or cleaned up.

IMG_1307

His naps are still pretty solid. His morning nap ranges anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half, simply depending on the day and whether we walk to school or not and how he’s slept the night before. His afternoon nap is still good, too, lasting 2-3 hours while Lana naps (thank you!!). He has started needing a little evening nap after dinner again much of the time, but it’s only about half an hour at most.

IMG_0769

Now I know I’ve painted a pretty good picture of Morrison’s life at 7 months here, but please don’t be fooled. It’s not all sunshine and roses. But why? you may ask. He’s so cute! Yeah, well don’t let that pretty little face pull the wool over your eyes. This kid

does

not

fucking

sleep!

Sorry for the language (hi, Mom and Grandma!), but it’s warranted here. This kid is an absolute nightmare overnight. He’s like a Gremlin – when the clock strikes midnight all hell breaks loose (it’s actually more like 11:30 for him, but whatever). More often than not, he spends at least 1 hour and up to about 4 hours fussing, crying, screaming, and robbing me of any hope for sleep and sanity. I have no idea what the reason is either. Right now he’s teething (oh yeah, his front 2 teeth have broken through in the past few days and the couple on either side of those are bulging, too, getting ready to poke down), so I’m sure that’s causing some discomfort, but even infant’s ibuprofen doesn’t seem to help in those heinous overnight stretches.

We’ve tried seemingly everything. He doesn’t get fed overnight anymore; he doesn’t get changed overnight anymore; I try putting him in bed with me to sleep on my chest (sometimes that works, but he usually just farts around and cries or sneezes in my face); Ryan bounces/rocks him (i’m so mean i usually refuse to get him out of his crib); we’ve tried giving him water in a bottle; he always gets his pacifier when he starts getting fussy; he wears overnight diapers now so he doesn’t get soaked; we have both a warm mist humidifier and little space heater right by his bed; he has a little nightlight and music player hanging right next to his bed as well. I just don’t know. I really wish he would learn how to suck his thumb like Lana did so I can do away with the pacifier, but I can only stand so much screaming before that plug goes back in.

What I do know, though, is that he’s the worst sleeping baby I have ever encountered right now. Terrible. Miserable. Obnoxious. Whatever synonym for “bad” you want to throw in here works. He slept better as a newborn than he does now. I just keep telling myself that this will eventually pass, because otherwise I’m ready to flush him. Seriously. Or send him somewhere far away where a nice mom will do a much better job of soothing him and figuring out what he needs during those hours, because I sure as hell am out of ideas.

So there. On a whole, I guess I’d say 7 months is pretty good for this kid. Just don’t ask me between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., because then I might just tell you I have a baby boy for sale. (joking, of course. kind of)

3xmas

Posterity stats this time since we don’t have his next well check until 9 months. He wears size 9 month clothes at the absolute smallest, and even most of those are starting to get small. A lot of 6-12 month outfits still fit well, though. He wears size 3 diapers and just started size 4s for overnights. (again in Lana’s 7 month post i saw she was only wearing size 2 diapers at this age. big kid)

Now for the monthly comparison. I’ve started thinking he resembles Della more, but they’re all still pretty much their own kid in the looks department. And for more reading, here is Lana’s 7 month post. Apparently she was a terrible sleeper at that point, too, but I don’t remember her nights being anything like Morrison’s are right now.

M 6 month stats

Half a year!

IMG_0728

Morrison turned 6 months old a week ago today. Only 1 week late with the post – that’s got to be a record! We did have his well check last week, too, so here are the numbers:

  • Height: 27.5″ (83%, 4 months was 97%)
  • Weight: 18.0625 lbs. (60%, 4 months was 73%)
  • Head: 44.5 cm (81%)
  • BMI: 17 kg/m2 (40%)

There actually is not a ton different from his 5 month post. He’s still rolling all around; jumping like crazy in the jumperoo; eating his oatmeal, sweet potatoes, avocados, and bananas; not sleeping through the night; 2 teeth; and drooling all over the place.

IMG_0745

His new favorite method of communication is grunting, which makes him sound like a tiny caveman. I have noticed some definite consonant sounds, though – m, n, and b.

IMG_0463

He gives the best bear hugs, which usually result in him grabbing my hair by the handful. Thankfully I can uncoil his little fingers before it actually gets yanked out of my head. He also loves to be tickled under his arms, on his belly, and under his chin. There is something about baby laughter that is like angels singing.

IMG_8199

He moves himself all around the play mats now, too, without crawling, so I think once the Christmas tree is down and there’s a little more space we’ll have to get the playpen out. Little stinker. He has also begun trying to sit himself up when you set him down. He has never successfully pulled himself all the way to sitting, but he’s certainly working those abs.

IMG_8325

I just read back through Lana’s 6 month post, and these 2 descriptions are strikingly similar. Oh dear lord in heaven, help us if Morrison is going to be as big a personality as Lana. His overall demeanor seems much calmer than hers ever has been, but what I wrote about her at 6 months could almost be copied and pasted right in here today. Eesh.

IMG_0286

I keep forgetting to include the posterity stats in Morrison’s updates – size 3 diapers and 6 month clothes at the absolute smallest (although 9 months have already started to fit much better than anything 6 month anymore). He naps in the morning for generally up to an hour just depending on if we’re walking to school or not, usually between 2-3 hours early- to mid-afternoon, and then he’s actually started putting a short evening nap back in sometimes. He still is ready for bed by about 7 at the latest, sometimes much earlier if he doesn’t take that evening cat nap, nurses 4 times a day throughout the morning and afternoon, eats solids at dinner, then has a 6 oz. bottle of formula at bedtime. I thought the bigger bottle of formula would help keep him full better during the night, but it still has had little effect on that nice long through-the-night stretch of sleep that we so desperately want. I don’t mind giving him that one bottle, though, because my milk supply is usually not enough for him to get full by that point in the day anyway.

So there he is, our half-year old. Cute, cute, cute!

IMG_0275

As usual, the Goonies comparison. Della, Lana, Morrison; sorry it’s kind of a weird picture, but the Della and Lana side was a comparison I already had from Lana’s 6 month post, so those 2 were already put together. I love these kids!

M 5 month stats

Only 2 weeks late, no big deal.

Morrison turned 5 months old on Halloween, and so far this has been probably his most eventful month yet. We don’t have a well-check until 6 months, so no official numbers again this time.

IMG_0105

But here’s what’s happening with this adorable little boy now:

He’s rolling. Back to front happened just a few days after his 5 month birthday, and it’s now his favorite activity when you put him down on the floor.

IMG_9540

He’s eating. He started getting solid foods the day after his 5 month birthday in the hopes that a dinner of solids might help him sleep through the night better. The jury is still out on that, but my new method of not feeding him at all during the night and just soothing him back to sleep in his crib with a pacifier and back pats if he wakes and fusses seems to be inching us closer, anyway.

IMG_0133

He’s teething. Ugh. That first tooth broke through that same week with the rolling and eating, and I don’t think he liked it at all. That’s a lot for 1 tiny body to handle all at once. And then the second one decided to join the party 2 days ago as well. Wahoo!

He’s drooling. Still and always.

IMG_0598

He’s cute!

IMG_9767

Here is the monthly comparison shot, and they were all taken in the same spot for once – Della, Lana, Morrison, left to right. And here is Lana’s 5 month post in case you’d like to compare notes as well.

5months

This little boy is an absolute joy, and I swear he just keeps getting happier and happier! Love, love, love.

IMG_9587

M 4 month stats

Morrison turned 4 months last Wednesday and we had his 4 month checkup that night, so here are his official stats. The girls’ stats are in parentheses for comparison – he’s huge! And I didn’t get the % or head measurement written down, so I’ll ask for those next time.

  • Height:  26.75″ (D: 25.5″, L: 25.5″)
  • Weight:  16 lbs. 10 oz. (D: 14 lbs. 4 oz., L: 13 lbs. 8.25 oz.)

IMG_9314

In just looking back at their baby books, I really have no idea how Della slept through the night by 3 months. What am I doing wrong with this one?? Granted he takes a pacifier, which D never did, and sleeps on his stomach all the time instead of his back, but still. I swear she didn’t eat more than he is or anything, so why such the good sleeping when Morrison still wakes up at least once, sometimes twice a night before morning? I am planning on starting solids pretty soon, though, so hopefully that will help. I’m thinking a little cereal at dinner time will help keep him fuller longer into (or through?!?) the night. Please.

IMG_7668

So besides still not sleeping through the night, let’s see what else is new with this little guy. He loves bouncing around in the jumper now, he’ll lie on the floor or in his little froggie chair and watch the girls forever, he’s constantly drooling (no teeth yet), and he always tries to get everything in his mouth. Whether that be his hands, his rag, or anything that happens to pass in front of his jaws, that little mouth is always trying to eat something.

IMG_9352

He is one of the happiest babies I’ve ever known, though, during the day. He’ll look at you with the biggest grin imaginable on that tiny little face. Talk about melting my heart. He’s gotten very talkative, too, with new noises and squeaks being added to the repertoire daily.

IMG_7674

He’s still in 3-6 month clothes, but I’m about ready to ditch those for all 6 months stuff since some are getting tight. I’ve cleared out almost all of the remaining size 2 diapers as well, so we’re all size 3 of the new Bambo Nature ones from here on out. He’s had a rash on his legs where the diapers rub for weeks that I thought was simply caused by irritation and had been putting Aquafor on it, but it turns out that it’s actually yeast causing that. So the doctor has me putting stuff for athlete’s foot on the affected areas until it clears up now. Sorry, little one, your first case of jock itch at age 0. Fun stuff.

So there’s the third-of-a-year update. I love you so much, my sweet boy!

IMG_9292

The comparison shot: Della, Lana, Morrison. And for even more reading enjoyment, here’s Lana’s 4 month update, too.

4 months

M 3 month stats

Morrison doesn’t have his next well check until 4 months, so this will just be a brief update post.

IMG_8891

He turned 3 months on Monday, August 31, and he’s turning into the smiliest little guy. You can almost always get him to smile and coo or gurgle at you, and I love that. He tells me lots of stories.

IMG_9009

He is back to being exclusively breastfed, as our experiment with a bottle of formula at bedtime ended when the sample tub was gone. It wasn’t really doing anything consistently, so I went back to nursing him at bedtime and there’s been no difference. So at least we don’t have to spend money on that right now.

M FB2

With Della’s full-day school starting this week, his naps have had to shift slightly. We walk to school at 7:45, and he usually doesn’t fall asleep until the walk home. Unfortunately, this means he only naps for maybe 10-15 minutes as we mosey, because he almost always wakes up as soon as we get home and the stroller stops moving. Then I try to keep him up the rest of the morning so he’ll take a good early afternoon nap at the same time as Lana. I’ll feed him and put him down as close to 11-11:30 as I can, then he’ll pretty much sleep the entire afternoon until it’s time to walk to pick Della up at 2:45. If he’s not up, I’ll wake him around 2:15 to eat and change him before we leave. His evening nap has become hit or miss; so if he doesn’t take one, bedtime is a little earlier, between 7-8, and if he does take one, it’s more his usual between 9-10.

He’s been doing a great job sleeping on his stomach, even sleeping 9 hours on it the other night! It was so hot earlier this week that I couldn’t bear to swaddle him, and I knew his flailing helicopter arms would keep waking him. So we put him on his stomach for bed the next night, too, and those were 2 of his longest stretches of night sleep yet. See. 😉

IMG_9077

He’s pretty much graduated from all of his 3 month clothes and is now wearing 3-6 and some 6 months. Diapers are now size 2. Where is my tiny little baby going??

And as much as I hate them, I have started giving him a pacifier here and there. They definitely help babies calm down, and he, especially, will conk out practically within seconds of sucking on it when he’s just incredibly tired and won’t stop crying. I never use it at bedtime or during the night (except to keep him quiet while i’m changing him before a middle-of-the-night feeding), only during the day. So hopefully he won’t become overly attached to it and we’ll get some silence when he’s sleepy. Even though his hands are constantly at or in his mouth, he hasn’t quite mastered the art of thumb sucking to calm himself on his own yet. Plus we got a new kind that I’m excited to use because our pediatrician said that round blue kind is really bad for their mouth formation. I love their cute designs and I think it’s so adorable when he has his little plug in his mouth.

2015-09-04

So, in a nutshell, there’s our happy little man. I just love you to the stars and back, my sweet boy! (and yes, i said stars instead of moon on purpose, because that’s a bigger distance to fill with more love. duh)

The Goonies comparison shot – left to right: Della, Lana, Morrison. Here I think they all look extremely different.

3 months

M 2 month stats

We had Morrison’s 2 month well check last night, and here are the official stats:

  • Height:  24″ (83%)
  • Weight:  13 lbs. 10 oz. (72%)
  • Head:  40.5 cm (82%)

He got his first round of real vaccinations then, too, and he definitely was not a fan. Just like the girls, though, he screamed as the shots went in and for just a minute afterward, then stopped and quieted right down. He is running a very mild fever today, though, and slept horribly last night, so hopefully those side effects wear off soon.

Before I forget, for posterity he wears size 1 diapers still but is just about ready to move up to size 2 once we use up the 1s we have left (he wore size 1 at his 1 month update post, too, i just forgot to mention it), and he wears mainly size 3 months clothes but can still fit into the majority of his 0-3 month outfits.

Sleeping: He’ll go to bed usually between 9-10, sleep a solid 4-5 hour stretch, then sleep another 2-3 hour stretch, then sleep anywhere from 1-3 more hours until his main morning wakeup, just depending on the day. Those days where his final stretch is only 1 hour, though, are killer. Sleeping in 3, 4, and 5 hour chunks is doable, but when I only get 1 hour at a time, hoo boy, that’s rough on the psyche. Once he’s up for the morning, I’ll change him, get him dressed, feed him, and then he’s usually back down within about an hour for a solid morning nap that is generally in the 2-3 hour range. Then he’s up again for an hour or so, naps another good block of 2-3 hours in the afternoon, up around dinner time for a little while, then most days takes another big evening nap for a couple hours before actually going to bed. Sounds like a lot of sleep, yes. However, the stretches at night still aren’t long enough for me to feel any less of a zombie than I did the days after he was born. I’ve just gotten much better at hiding it. 😉

I am trying to phase out that evening nap, though, in the hopes of getting him to sleep possibly through the night by the time school starts in September. I’ve also begun giving him a 4 oz. bottle of formula for his bedtime feeding instead of nursing him to bed, which will hopefully keep him fuller longer and allow for longer sleeping. I’m not switching any other feedings to formula, though, unlike when Lana switched and she went to all formula all the time. I just want this little dude to let me sleep through the night before I have to be the first one up again on school mornings. And I won’t lie, I want to keep burning those calories from breastfeeding.

Activity: He’s already rolled over! 3 days ago he rolled off his play mat from stomach to back twice, then 2 days ago I finally caught him in the act in his crib. That is way earlier than either of his sisters. Lana rolled at 4 months, and I’d have to look in Della’s baby book to see when she rolled, because I don’t remember. His doctor said this is actually on the normal scale of timing, not super early like I thought, but she said most babies don’t even roll anymore because they’re always on their backs and don’t need to; they can already see everything around them. Morrison is on his stomach so much, though, because that’s how he naps well. He almost never falls asleep on his back except for nights, when I still swaddle him. Otherwise his arms and legs are all over the place and he wakes himself up constantly.

IMG_7316

He also scoots himself along on his stomach. A week or so ago I heard him crying in the living room, and he had scooted himself all the way off his giraffe/turtle play mat combo onto the hardwood floor on his stomach and had his face pressed against the floor. Poor kid. He digs his little toes in, pushes his buns up in the air, then motors himself forward. As soon as he figures out that he can get his arms and hands underneath him for leverage, he’s going to fly across the room. Let’s not tell him about that quite yet.

He almost always smiles back at you now, and within the past week or 2 has started making more and more little noises. I love to say hi to him and hear him answer with his little version of “hi” or coos. It’s the most adorable thing ever.

IMG_7389

Now for the tri-parison shot. As usual, Della on the left, Lana in the middle, and Morrison on the right. I forgot I could do post comparisons, too, so here’s Lana’s 1 month update to compare for last month and her 2 month update to compare this time for your reading enjoyment.

2 months

M 1 month stats

Yes, I’m way behind again on my posting, especially with updates of life with Morrison and 3 kids, but I figured I had to at least get his 1 month update post up here before he turns 2 months old in just 3 days. Gheesh!

Here are his 1-month checkup stats compared to his first week checkup stats:

  • Height:   (6/5/15) 20″ (50%)                 (7/8/15) 22.75″ (84%)
  • Weight:  (6/5/15) 8 lbs. 6 oz. (75%)     (7/8/15) 11 lbs. 8 oz. (73%)
  • Head:      (6/5/15) 36 cm (85%)             (7/8/15) 38.8 cm (79%)

He started smiling at 6 weeks exactly, just like Lana, and it is the cutest. Helps make up for those times when he screams in my face. Another thing Lana did often. Hmm…

M FB

He also is the strongest baby on the planet. His legs are constantly “jumping.” The other day he scooted himself all the way off his giraffe playmat onto the floor by digging in his little toes and pushing himself forward with his legs. Little booger! I’m going to have to get the playpen out already just to contain him while napping.

Since you all love the comparisons so much and I’m sure you’ve missed my giant belly pictures, here is a hat trick of 1 month shots. Della on the left, Lana in the middle, and Morrison on the right.
