FF & other news

Happy April! This is one of my favorite months – the warm weather *usually* starts to settle in for good (although after this miserable winter i’m starting to have my doubts it’ll ever get above 40 again), the flowers and plants all start coming back to life for real after the couple March warmth fake-outs, it’s our anniversary month, and it finally feels like the year is starting fresh after the doldrums of winter hibernation. Plus, D turns 8 months old today. Happy 8 month birthday, you beautiful little girl!

So did anyone get any April Fool’s pranks played on them today? Or play any on someone else? Some people get totally into the tom foolery of this day, but I never really have. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for a good prank or a spook every now and then, but I’ve never put cling wrap over the toilet bowl or short-sheeted anybody’s bed or told someone a ridiculous lie in the hopes of getting them to fall for it just to shout “April Fool’s!” once they realized it’s a joke. The Onion always has a great slew of fake headlines on April 1 – check it out:

OnMilwaukee.com has some good ones today too:  http://onmilwaukee.com/

I am also happy to report that I made it out for a jog again yesterday. 2 days in a row?? Woah, slow down before someone gets hurt. I did the same route as the day before, and went 2 seconds faster – 1.44 miles in 13:04. Blazin’! I do need new running shoes, though. I noticed last night that it felt like I had nothing more between my pounding feet and the sidewalk than a flip-flop. Not good for preventing injuries.

This is a totally random post today, but this is too cool not to share. This is a bald eagle’s nest in Decorah, IA, and there are 3 eggs in there that are about ready to hatch. I’ve been watching it for a couple days now, since their expected hatch date is today. This morning was really neat – a second eagle flew into the nest and switched places with the one who had been sitting on the eggs, and you could see all 3 eggs in plain view. They each have a little hole in them, so those chicks have to be getting ready to greet the world. Nature is so awesome. Plus there’s a dead rabbit stuffed in the left side of the nest, maybe just for a mid-hatch snack. 🙂

And now for the FF of the week. I’ll turn to my quote book again, but it’s so hard to pick just one. So I’ll throw 2 atcha this time:

“Mix a little foolishness with your prudence: It’s good to be silly at the right moment.” ~ Horace

“Stressed spelled backwards is desserts. Coincidence? I think not!” ~ Author Unknown

Take note, Mother Nature!

I did it! (& a couple other things)

I just have to toot my own horn here for a second. I went out and jogged after work yesterday! Toot toot! I’ve mentioned how I have completely slacked off from exercising all winter and basically for the better part of a year now, and it’s finally gotten to me. I have to get back into some sort of shape! The other night I had 2 pieces of Ian’s pizza for dinner (holy yum, btw), which usually I’m all about, but when I got done eating this time I thought man, that made me feel like total junk. I need to change something here. So yesterday I got home early, the sun was out, it was above freezing (turns out not by much, though), and I actually was motivated to lace up the kicks and get out there.

Now please notice that I did not say I went for a *run*. I know better. 😉 This was definitely 100% a jog. I knew it would be though – I can’t head out just sprinting along like some people. I’m the type of runner who, if I’m really going to get into running shape and stick with it without injuring myself, needs to start out very very slowly and ease into things. Especially right now since I’m totally out of shape. I planned on simply going for 1 mile with no walking allowed, see how that felt, and add on if I could manage that far. I also told R to take a guess at what my 1 mile time would be – I said 11:22. Well, I just plugged my stats and route into my MapMyRun account and whaddya know? A 9:05 mile pace! Holla!! I went 1.44 miles in 13:06. Sweetness, much better than I was expecting. However, that was only for 1.44 miles. I’m sure as soon as I start to add distance that pace will slow exponentially. 😉 I need to keep at it, though. It’s sunny again today and supposed to be mid-40s, so maybe I’ll give it another shot tonight. I do need to make sure not to do too much too fast though, because I often end up with shin splints when I go that route. At least 1 day off in between runs is usually my preferred routine, but I know I won’t feel like it tomorrow afternoon.

I was pretty annoyed during my jog, though, because it seemed no matter which direction I went – north, south, east, or west – I was constantly running INTO the wind. I must’ve been in a vortex, lucky me. 😉 And it was cold, too! Man, I can’t wait for this crap cold weather to end.

I can’t run without music either. I used to hate running with headphones on, but now I can’t stand to not have them. I can too easily talk myself out of the run when all I can think about is how badly my legs and lungs hurt. So music provides a nice distraction. Plus, when the pump-up songs come on it seems like each step gets just a little bit lighter and easier. Yesterday Perfect Gentleman by Wyclef came on toward the end of my run, and dude, that is my JAM! For my Madison peeps out there, you know the relationship that song and I have – it would come on, usually at Brother’s, and I would instantly be on top of a table dancing. Kind of like a Pavlovian dog. Ahh, the good ol’ days….

Ok, onto the couple other things… Today is the Brewers season opener. Oh yeah, Go Brew Crew!! D’s all into it too:

My first Brewers outfit!

I took that picture on my phone this morning in dim light, so it’s not the clearest shot, but I love her little almost-smile in that one. She’s such a character, I love it. Monday is their home opener, and D has another special outfit for that one. 😉 Here’s a great Bob Uecker article to get you in the spirit too:

R made another wicked meal for dinner last night – pork tenderloin, cut into thirds, tenderized, grilled, made into a sandwich on amazing pretzel rolls with cheese and his delicious homemade mustard blend concoction on top. Let the drooling commence:

And best of all – it’s almost Friday!! Hell to the yeah!

All high tech and stuff

I’m still learning how to set up all the intricacies of my website and its widgets and plug-ins galore here, and today I found yet another one that I’ve been looking for. Those cool little sharing buttons I see all over the place. If one of my posts is just so fantastically outstanding that you can’t believe the entire general population hasn’t read it, those little clicky buttons at the bottom of each one should send it zooming off across the world wide interwebs in the fashion of your choosing.

Anyone want to test them out? Go ahead, I dare ya… 😉

You guys, I am so excited

Look what’s back in stores:

Leinie’s Summer Shandy!! I just saw it for the first time this season last weekend and had to pick up a 12er. SM, really, again with the beer? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. But look, this is one of my favorite brews, it’s only around in the summertime, and I couldn’t have any of it last year. I promise, I’m not an alcoholic, I simply enjoy good beer, especially when everything about it just SCREAMS summer!

And a new added bonus with the Shandy this year is that each bottle neck label has a code that you can text in to win a “Trip to the Chip” or a Leinie’s canoe. A Leinie’s canoe?? Sweet! Sign me up. (side note – i had a couple bottles from that 12er this weekend and R already texted in all my codes. i’d love a leinie’s canoe!)

I love how the Leinie’s website has a Shandy countdown clock on it that still has over 2 days left. Apparently it’s not supposed to come out until April. I must be special. That, or else I just got the end of last year’s stock and they replaced the labels with the new ones for Trip to the Chip. 😉 Who cares, it still tasted good!

Ahhh…. summer here we come!

Too bad it’s still frickin’ 25 degrees this morning, ugh. 🙁

HA! (or maybe haaahhh)

Completely random, but hilarious, which makes it post-worthy. And I totally found it on the almighty Heir to Blair blog (link that-a-way ———>).

p.s. I couldn’t get this video to show up as the clip box from YouTube, but the link does work. I need to brush up on my embedding skillz apparently.

p.p.s. Never mind – I got the clip box to work now. Thanks, R! 🙂

Division of power

One of the radio personalities we listen to each morning declared she was going on strike in her house a few weeks ago, and it got me thinking…. What would cause me to go on strike in our house? Is there any reason I’d ever feel the need to do so?

Her big thing was that she was fed up with not getting any help from her husband and kids when it came time to figure out what to have for dinner each day (yeah, it was a real knock down, drag out fight, can’t you tell? ;)). Now, dear readers, I would never find myself in this situation because, as many of you know, I don’t cook. I don’t enjoy it, I don’t get any real satisfaction out of whipping up a whole big spread or a nice fancy dish, I don’t like following recipes and getting all the ingredients and dishes together, and I’m not particularly good at it. I mean I am certainly capable of following a recipe and producing an edible finished product, but it’s just not my thing. In fact, I often say that if you want to torture me, make me chop stuff. Yuck.

Fortunately I am very lucky to have R, who is a wonderful cook and actually does enjoy it. This obviously isn’t the only reason I’m lucky to have him, but you know what I’m sayin’. He loves trying new recipes and gets totally involved in the prep and execution. His signature meal is Thanksgiving – he’s been known to make the entire buffet line of eats, even when it’s not really Thanksgiving. It’s hilarious too – he always stages his good dishes and photographs them. I’ll have to post some pics the next time we have one. They usually involve nice big cuts of meat, so it’s a good thing I’m not a vegetarian!

He’s gotten really into making food for D as well, which is awesome. He’ll bake up a batch of sweet potatoes and puree them up to be frozen, steam other veggies and do the same, and he even boiled a couple chicken breasts and baby-food-ified them the other night too to see if she’ll try meat yet (fyi, she won’t. she gagged every little bite of chicken. not sure if it was too salty or the texture, but it was pretty funny to see. so we’ll stick to cereal and veggies and fruit for now). I have contributed slightly in the baby food department – I’m good at mashing bananas. Probably because all you need for that is a fork, not a food processor. 😉 I wasn’t kidding when I said I’m lazy; it applies to this aspect of my life, too.

One time one of my grandparents asked me if it bothered me at all that R does all of the cooking. No, of course not, I replied (i think my answer may have surprised them a little. what? a woman doesn’t feel displaced when her husband does all the cooking? heaven forbid. yeah, different generations and all. i’ll forgive them :)). You see, we have an excellent division of power in our house – R cooks, I clean. It’s a great system. For although I couldn’t care less if I know how to make boeuf bourguignon or a killer rack of lamb, I do pride myself in keeping a mean clean house. I try to get things dusted and vacuumed once every week or two, which of course R thinks is totally unnecessary, maybe because he’s often trying to play video games when I want to vacuum. Too bad, just pick your feet up for 5 seconds. Whenever he huffs about me cleaning I just keep politely reminding him that he could have much worse things than a wife who keeps a clean house.

Don’t get me wrong, housework is not something I consider *fun*, but I do feel great once I have the house cleaned, the laundry done, and the rest of my weekend to enjoy the lack of clutter and piles of junk from the week and dust bunnies running around the wood floors. While we were remodeling it drove me crazy having entire rooms’ worth of stuff packed into other rooms (i swear we didn’t get to use our dining room as an actual dining room for a good year at one point), plaster dust all over the joint, and certain uninhabitable areas of the house in general. But now that we’re all put back together I do love seeing clean dust-free furniture, crumb- and dirt-free floors, and shiny tile kitchen counter tops. Call me crazy, I can take it.

So what are things like in your household? If you’re married or live with someone do you have a similar divide and conquer system, or is one or the other of you responsible for the brunt of the chores? Any of you feeling like you need to go on strike yet?

I guess to answer my own original question, I can’t really think of any good reason that I would tow the picket line at home in this regard. Our cook/clean division of power is a well-oiled machine, so I’ll stick with it. Plus one of these days I’m sure R will teach D how to find her way around the kitchen and I’ll show her how to help Mommy use the dusters. 🙂 R is notorious for turning his closet area into a massive clothes monster, but instead of striking and refusing to clean it up, I just go in there every so often and put the pile away. And just remind myself that I could have much worse things than a husband who throws his clothes on the floor. 😉

Help!

Ok guys, I need some assistance. Our 5 year wedding anniversary is coming up in just a few weeks, and I have NO IDEA what to get R. I mean I’ve got nuthin’. My mind is completely blank on this one for some reason. Usually I can come up with something pretty decent, but every time I try to think of anything now I just get tumbleweeds rolling around in my brain.

Any ideas?? What do you get the guy who gets everything he wants for himself? He’s the one that knows all about the latest tech stuff and gadgets, so that genre is hard to sneak past him. Plus he knows WAY more about all those gizmos than I do. I’d also lean towards getting him an “experience”, if you will, as opposed to a “thing”, since we have very little room left in our house for more things that just sit there and look pretty.

We are going out to a really nice dinner to celebrate, which we agreed would be a joint present, but I’d still like to have a little somethin’ just for him. I have already warned him, though, that I’m lost on this one and not to expect anything (which he said goes the same for me, and with which i am TOTALLY fine), but I’d still feel kinda bad giving him nothing. 5 years seems like a big one.

The 5 year gift is wood. Umm…. wood? Let the brain-wracking commence….

I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Love, SM

*I really hope this isn’t the day R decides to check out my blog!*
