We need to teach her to say thank you

Because D hears “Oh my gosh you are the cutest baby!” everywhere we go, multiple times. Seriously, every person that sees her when we’re out in public comments on the living cuteness that is our daughter. And I’m not gonna lie, she is stinkin’ cute. I’ve remarked countless times that I really can’t even believe she’s mine sometimes. I look at her and see that little cherubic beautiful smiley face and just think, “Did that one really come from me? That is actually my kid?”

Today she ran errands with me for about 2 hours and was absolutely awesome. Not one fuss, not one peep of crankiness until in the car right before we got home. But she was hungry and tired, and I couldn’t blame her one bit. She’s too heavy for me to carry around in her infant car seat anymore, so this was my first time holding her while shopping. And I think my left bicep is twice as strong as when I woke up this morning because of it.

Our first stop was the shoe store, which she loved. Takes after Mommy in that regard, much to Daddy’s chagrin. 😉 She helped me return a pair then try on a bunch to ultimately pick out 2 winners, so that was fun. Then we had to run to Target. Or as I like to call it, the $100 store; for no matter how few items are on your list when you walk through its doors, you can never leave without spending $100 or more. Fortunately here I could put her in the cart, saving my arms. She’s never actually sat in the cart seat before, we’ve always snapped her car seat onto the seat rails, so I took in one of those shopping cart seat covers that someone had given us at one of our showers. I liked it – I’m not so much freaked out by all the germs on the carts, even though I did wipe it down with a cart wipe on our way in, but it just helped keep her in there a little better. She’s still pretty small for the cart seat, so the extra padding from the cover helped. She had a blast playing with various items I bought and trying to monkey her way out of the seat and either into the back of the cart or over the handles. We saw our good friend K there, too, so D had some stories to tell her about all of our adventures thus far.

Mom, this is so much fun!

Now, how do we get this good behavior to last through her teenage years? Anyone, anyone?

Take me out to the ball game

Last night was D’s first Brewers game, and she had a ball! We seriously could not have ordered a more well-behaved baby for the evening. I picked her up early from daycare so I could get home, bathe her, and get a quick jog** in before we went, and thankfully she cooperated and napped for an hour right before we left. We got to the stadium at 5:30 and didn’t leave until just before 10:30, which is a good 2-3 hours past her bedtime, but she was awake and happy the entire time. I figured her 6 teeth weren’t quite sufficient to handle a brat, so I fed her some delicious jars of turkey and mixed veggie dinner and peas and rice (both organic, kudos to Roundy’s) while R fired up the grill. She was all done and ready to soak in all the tailgating action by the time the adult food was ready, so that worked out perfectly.

We had ridiculous seats – 4th row, directly behind the Brewers on-deck circle, which made for some great viewing pleasure. R snagged a Fielder-foul-tipped ball that was tossed into our section by one of the bat boys, so he graciously gave that to D as a souvenir of her first game. And then I prevented her from putting it immediately into her mouth to try and lick off all that good diamond dirt. 🙂 Shockingly enough, I caught another one later in the game, which I gave to our friend S. No need to be greedy. It was cute, too – R took D over to the guest relations booth shortly after we got there, and they printed up a little “My First Brewers Game” certificate for her. It wasn’t anything fancy, we just fill in her name and date and stuff, but still a nice gesture for the littlest Brewers fans on their first appearances.

It was an awesome night all around. Good weather, the roof was open (which made for some chilly wind by the end of the night, but better than rain), great friends were able to join us, the Brewers won, and little D once more made us so proud with her smiley, happy, easy-going spirit. She had made friends with everyone in the seats around us by the time we left. R joked on the way home that maybe we should just stop at one – D is so good we have to have used up all our good fortune in this kid. Will all of the bad stuff we’ve so far avoided with her be channeled into the next one if we give her a sibling? Or is she just saving it all up for the teenage years? Oh please god, not option #2!

The only lowlight of the night came at the end of the game – we were hoping to get a picture of D with R’s cousin who plays for the Brewers on the field, but he didn’t come over our way after the team victory handshake. R was pretty bummed, because he thought his cuz for sure saw us a couple times during the game, so I felt bad for him – I knew how much he wanted that picture of little D on the field with a Brewer to cap off her first game. Hopefully sometime this season we’ll be able to get one to make up for it.

I had to snap a picture to document D’s first baseball game, but it was on my phone so it’s not the highest quality. R took many, many more on his good camera, so I’ll have to get some of those up here once they’re uploaded.

I love the Brewers!

Go Brew Crew!

**run stats – 1.44 miles, 11:23, 7:55 pace. holy smokin’ fast! i’m not going to count that as my normal pace because it’s a really short route and i was in a hurry last night, knowing we had to leave shortly after i got done. i am encouraged, though. i’m going to try a 5k route later this week, so i’m sure that will be more along the lines of my 9:00+ pace.

9 month stats

Buenos dias. Happy Cinco de Mayo! Anyone start the day off with a festive cocktail? Yeah, me neither. 😉

Lil’ Miss D had her 9 month well baby appointment yesterday, so I thought I’d run through where our big girl stands:

  • 29 in. (90th %)
  • 18 lbs. 1.5 oz. (25-50th %)
  • I don’t know what her exact head circumference was but it was in the 50th %

Tricks she can do:

  • clapping
  • scooting all over the place on her butt (almost gets over to actually crawl, but then pulls her legs back around to the front to scoot)
  • talking (lots of da-da-das, na-na-nas, dis-dis, dat-dat, and her new favorite – high-pitched squeaks and squeals. i call it her “singing” 🙂 . no real words yet)
  • arms up in the air to show she’s “So Big!”
  • been sitting up unassisted since about 4 months old
  • pulling herself up and then standing there by herself holding on or playing with a toy
  • VERY active – rarely sits still, which the doctor thought was hilarious. she practically squirmed off my lap at one point so i stood her up to play with that baby in the mirror to distract her

Besides the fact that she has another ear infection, it was a great check-up. Her pediatrician said she’s right on track with her growth and development, and even a little ahead of schedule. I think she was just trying to downplay it, but I’ll take that to mean my baby’s a genius!! 😉

Here’s a further glimpse into the life of our little sweet pea. We’ll start with her likes:

  • all of her tricks mentioned above
  • playing with her toys – especially anything that lights up and/or makes sounds, and any two objects she can bang together to make noise. so i guess pretty much everything
  • eating paper
  • sweet potatoes
  • bananas
  • peas
  • beans
  • apples and pears
  • cereal
  • digging into your shoulder to give you a huge hug (the best!)
  • trying to stick her fingers in outlets (fortunately we have the kind where you can’t stick anything in them, but still. we need to break her of that habit since not every place has those)
  • trying to pull anything within reach toward her and her ever-open mouth
  • showing off her 6 teeth
  • yogurt
  • Cheese Puffs
  • playing in her playpen and jumperoo
  • walks in her stroller

Now for some dislikes:

  • meats
  • having her nose wiped
  • putting on/changing clothes
  • getting strapped into her car seat
  • hmm… that’s honestly about it. she really is a very happy little girl

Seriously, how can you not love this face??

“Good night, sweet girl”

One of the best lines from one of mine and R’s favorite movies, Beautiful Girls.

And how wonderful that I can now say it to our sweet girl. I love watching D fall asleep in my arms, before when she was nursing, and now when I give her a bedtime (or maybe naptime) bottle. Her tiny little hands with the dimpled knuckles slowly stop trying to grab the bottle or smack her head or pull on strands of her hair (or mine), her long and gorgeous eyelashes flutter less often as her eyelids become heavier and heavier, and if I’m lucky I get to see a flash of the sweet little sleep smile once the bottle is gone and she’s officially in slumber land. That enchanting little smile that was the first one we saw before she actually started smiling during her waking hours too. It makes my heart swell and takes me back to those first precious days of teeny tiny baby D.

Good night, sweet girl.

Attack of the Cheeto

Auntie M was in town for Easter last weekend and she was dying to let D try Cheetos. I said fine, but not regular Cheetos – they’re too hard and crunchy. Fortunately my mom got the Cheetos Puffs, which were perfect. And whaddya know, she loved them! We gave her one and she went to town on the thing. By the end all she had left in her hand was a slimy little cheesy nub, so I took that away from her before she tried to scoot away and smear it on the rug or the leather chair. Plus I don’t think they’re the most nutritional thing we could’ve given her. 😉

Behold, the attack of D’s first Cheeto (pardon the sirens and noise in the background. we were watching “Date Night”. she apparently loved that too.)! I told you she rarely sits still. 😉

Attack of the Cheeto!

Month 8 has seen lots of movement

As April winds down and May approaches, I’ve been thinking back on how much D has accomplished this month. She started scooting in earnest early in the month (the video R took was from April 6) instead of just pushing herself around on her stomach. This may actually have started before then, but that was the first time we saw her do it at home. We’re still waiting for that first crawl, though. Unkie C gave her plenty of lessons this past weekend, but scooting is still her preferred method of transportation.

She started pulling herself up on things. The little monkey in the bars of her crib was last week on April 18, and then her teacher said she finally pulled herself all the way up on the play blocks at daycare the day after that too. I was playing with her on the floor this weekend and she used my arm to pull herself up to fully standing – there she was, all 28ish inches of her looking me right in the eye. 🙂 That was the first time I’d seen her stand as well. Before that she’d just gotten to her knees with one foot trying to move to standing.

She likes to rock her highchair. And I don’t mean like she’s all heeeeyyy, check me out in my new highchair. I mean she literally rocks the thing. At meal times she’ll take a bite, then rock back and forth, slamming into the back of the seat and scooting the whole chair. Granted the wheels do lock to prevent movement, so it’s not like she’s cruising around the house in a highchair, but it’s still funny. 😉 This chick does not like to sit still.

This one’s not movement-related, but her top teeth are now coming in to match the pair of chompers on the bottom. Chuck and Cecil have upstairs neighbors! These broke through last month, but now the front four are prominently on display in that darling little smile.

Ok you can't see her top teeth in this one, but I just thought this picture was so cute

Our beautiful baby girl is getting so big! I can’t believe she’ll be 9 months old in a few days. 9 months sounds like a long time, but I remember the feel of bringing her home for the very first time as if it was yesterday. In all honesty, though, the time has seemed to go by just right, if that makes any sense. It does seem like it’s been 9 whole months, instead of flying by like time usually does. But I know in a couple years I’ll look back on these days and say it all went by in the blink of an eye…

My heart

But babe, you’re good at LOTS of things

I don’t know how many times I’ve said this to R in response to his frequent complaint of “I just wish I was really good at one thing.”

Um, hello? You’re great at everything! Let’s see, where should I begin the list? I know, sports:  football, basketball, baseball, track. Throw in pretty much any other sport that involves throwing, catching, or running, and he’s good at that too. Up next, things at home:  only ANYTHING, seeing as he has now single-handedly rebuilt and remodeled almost our entire house – structure, wiring, plumbing, duct work, appliances. He can even sew! He also shovels snow in winter, helps mow the lawn in summer, and takes out/brings in the garbage cans. What else? Cooking:  duh – we all know he’s amazing at this and does all of it for our household. Additionally, all things mechanic or electronic:  he’s changed the brakes on our vehicles, given them oil changes, helped replace a heater core (what? don’t ask – it was a miserable project), fixed window motors, replaced radios, and he is famous for his knowledge of every gadget from cell phones to computers to TVs and everything in between. And don’t forget all of his hobbies:  home brewing, charcuterie (and basically anything meat-related), motorcycles, music, kites, model rockets, photography. That list is pretty much endless. Is there anything this kid can’t do? In a word – nope.

Now me, on the other hand. I am really good at one thing. Swimming. I swam all through high school and college. I was a State Champion in high school, All-American in college, Academic All-Big Ten in college, and I held a school record at UW-Madison (that has long since been broken, but still. it was up there for a little while. :)). I’ve also been a US Masters National Champion in my years since college. Wow, SM, you’re a stud. Yes, yes, thank you, please hold your applause (modest, much? ;)). But, please notice how short that list is – ONE thing. See R’s up there? He has like a million. Sure I can kick your ass up and down a pool, but when it comes to being good, even moderately good, at a whole host of things, I fall far short.

This conversation always makes me curious, too – does everyone want to be really good at one thing? Like really, really, good, as I am with swimming (i’m sorry, i’m not usually so blatantly cocky, but i’ve learned to look back on my swimming career and be really proud of my accolades after downplaying them for many years)? Or would most people prefer to be good at a lot of things, as in R’s case? I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather be able to do pretty much anything I ever need for myself instead of having to ask for help all the time over being able to swim fast. Unfortunately, I swim fast.

Oh! How could I forget the most important thing R is good at? He’s the most fantastic, wonderful father – D is a very lucky little girl.

Daddy and D getting ready to hunt for eggs

He let her put all the eggs in the basket - so cute!

Daddy we found another one!

And another...

He just loves this little girl so much
