Ode to daycare

Oh, our daycare, we do love it so.

D loves to constantly learn and play and grow.

She whines a little when we arrive,

But after hand washing she’s off to thrive.

Her days are filled with art and song,

And sometimes she acts like she’d rather stay there all night long.

The teachers in all of her rooms so far

Have been absolutely wonderful – right now she’s a Shining Star.

But there’s just one thing about which I need to complain.

And no, it’s not that today’s filled with rain.

You see this thing keeps happening;

This thing which does not make my heart sing.

Every couple weeks the tell-tale signs begin –

Coughing, sneezing, snot rivers down to D’s chin.

Her excellent sleep patterns are soon replaced

By this screaming monster whom I’d like to punch in the face.

Not one night has gone by this week

Where we haven’t awoken to her midnight shriek.

“No, not again, go back to sleep!” I silently pray.

For I know this will lead to yet another horrible day.

A double ear infection, pink eye, and yes, she’s on meds.

Unfortunately they haven’t yet helped to calm her nighttime head.

I, too, now feel the beginning of this damn stupid cold,

And these aches, pains, and bloodshot eyes are getting quite old.

So dear daycare, you’re the best, but give me a break!

I don’t know how much more sickness our little family can take.

Your kids are all cute, I’m not gonna lie.

But I’m now pretty certain they can all shoot biological-warfare grade snot straight out of their eye.

  1. I feel ya! We just spent 5 days in the hospital, because little Ava got pneumonia. Horrible, horrible. And yes, I do blame day care.

  2. perfect poem!  Hope you are doing well! – P.S.  How did you add the instagram feed to your sidebar?  LOVE IT!

    1.  @angie608 Thanks, Angie! We’re all still sick, but hopefully we’ll be on the mend soon! That is the Instapress plugin – so great.

    1. This super immunity seems to be a theme from parents with older kids, so banking on you guys being right, ha! 🙂 I can’t wait for the snot rivers to permanently subside.

  3. We did so love our kids’ daycares. But oh MAN the sickies we brought home some days. They say you’ll never be so sick in your life as during your kids’ first three years! Happy SITS day!

    1.  @jesterqueen I know!! And I just heard that from another person too, so you ladies are giving me hope. 🙂 Thank you!

  4. Just think about the immune system she is building up! I have 3 school angers now and can count on one hand the amount of sick days we have had so far with al. 3 children combined!

    1.  @Makingitworkmom Oh that gives me hope!! She’s been in daycare for almost a year and a half now, so I would’ve thought the immunity would have kicked in by now, but apparently no such luck.

    1.  @NewYorkCliche Thank you so much! I thought this one deserved a little ditty all its own. 😉

  5. Ugh … I feel the same way about a mom group I attend and church … we come home with the nastiest stuff!

    Enjoy your SITS day! 🙂

  6. That brought back some memories!  Sorry to report that they are still snot-slinging, germ machines in high school.  One kid with pertussis single-handedly nearly shut the whole school down.

  7. My friend has been going through this lately. Her little one has a double ear infection and hand, foot, and mouth. I’ve been lucky enough to stay home with my children most of the time. My oldest got the croup in daycare once when he was little. It’s just a breading pot for kids diseases.

    1.  @HomeJobsbyMOM It totally is! D has hand a number of ear infections (most recently a double ear infection coupled with pink eye, yuck!), HFM, croup, and more colds than I can count. Everyone has told me the first couple years are the worst, so hopefully they’re right. 😉

  8. Over from SITS.
Sweet, funny and sad all in one post.  Good luck getting/ staying healthy.  Snot rockets are no fun, ew.

  9. Oh wow THIS. IS. SO. TRUE. We are battling that biological warfare right now and it stinks!!! Hope everyone in your house if feeling fine. And … I just happened to read that you are a Badger. I’m a Hawkeye, but hopefully we can still be friends. 🙂

Visiting from SITS today {better late than never}. Have a wonderful mother’s day.

    1.  @RedheadReverie Thank you so much! And happy belated Mother’s Day to you!

Unfortunately, we have a new round of sickness that just hit last night. I’m afraid it’s going to turn out to be hand, foot, and mouth AGAIN. Yuck!! My husband is home with her today, so we’ll see what the diagnosis turns out to be.

Ok, we can be friends, but GO BADGERS!! 🙂
